Portsmouth Schools Undergo Asbestos Re-Inspection

Re-inspection of the buildings contaminated with asbestos in Portsmouth, New Hampshire is to be conducted this month. As per the regulations of the US Environmental Protection Agency, asbestos contaminated buildings need to be re-inspected every three years. Qualified and certified asbestos inspectors will conduct the inspection. After the results are analyzed by management planners, recommendations will be given to the city so that the buildings contaminated with asbestos can be managed safely and efficiently.

MassDEP Fines Delaware Company For Asbestos Violation

Following the violation of Massachusetts state asbestos regulations at one of the company’s earlier work facilities, the Delaware based Life Technologies Corporation will now have to pay a $7,940 penalty. The penalty has been ordered by the Department of Environmental Protection in Massachusetts (MassDEP).

Asbestos Found In Kansas Prisons During Audit

Asbestos cleanup has been started at two prisons following the discovery of toxic asbestos in buildings system wide, during a Kansas state prisons audit. The audit was performed in the prisons at Ellsworth, El Dorado, Larned, Stockton, Norton, Hutchinson, Lansing, Winfield, Wichita and Topeka. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criticized the situation in which asbestos was poorly handled in a Topeka prison earlier this year and was of the view that the state has not reacted well on the issue. Taking these comments of the EPA in consideration, the Kansas Department of Corrections spent a total of $170,000 on the assessment of floor tiles, ceiling material, pipe insulation and other materials in state prisons.

Mesothelioma deaths on the rise in Libby

Notwithstanding the efforts made by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) officials, the number of deaths caused by asbestos in Libby, Montana continues to rise, as reported by the LA Times. Asbestos fibers from a former vermiculite mine have caused serious illness, including a rare form of cancer known as mesothelioma, among local residents. Many have died because they inhaled or ingested asbestos particles.

Over 5 Tons of Asbestos Dumped, Contractors Arrested

Charges have been filed against Robert L. Bishop and Salvatore P. Capizzi of Buffalo, New York, accused of the illegal dumping of over 5 tons of toxic asbestos waste. The men were arrested on Wednesday March 5, 2010, after an investigation by the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Bureau of Environmental Crimes Investigation and the attorney general’s office.
