Patients with DePuy Pinnacle® hip replacements are at risk for early implant failure resulting from metal wear and corrosion.
Most hip replacement recipients are aware that Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy Orthopaedics recalled its ASR™ and ASR-XL™ hip replacement systems in August of 2010, when the United Kingdom National Joint Registry reported exceedingly high failure rates for recipients of those implants. See DePuy ASR Hip Implant Recall. Many people claim that Johnson & Johnson took much too long to recall the ASR.
One of the principal reasons for the recall was that ASR™ and ASR-XL™ hip implants sustained excessive metal wear frequently causing metalosis, pseudotumors, fluid effusions, tissue damage and high cobalt/chromium ion levels in the blood.
DePuy Orthopaedics acknowledges that recipients of Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy Pinnacle® hip replacements are at risk for adverse responses to metal debris including persistent pain, high blood levels of cobalt and chromium, pseudotumors, effusions (production of liquid in the hip capsule), bone loss, tissue damage, and component loosening, but has stated that such adverse responses and complications with the Pinnacle® hip replacement are extremely rare.
However, adverse event reports (AER’s) filed with the FDA concerning the DePuy Pinnacle® have been mounting quickly. In the first nine months of 2011, 1265 Pinnacle® AERs have been reported to the FDA compared with 556 reported in all of 2010.
More alarming, in February of 2011, one of the designers of the DePuy Pinnacle® hip replacement stated at a medical conference that in his view the risks of metal-on-metal hip replacements outweighed their benefits.
