UK Highlights Danger of Asbestos in Schools

The UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has served an improvement notice to the Bedford Borough Council, after concluding that the council failed to review the asbestos management program at Beauchamp Middle School. Health and safety experts claimed that the presence of ‘deadly’ asbestos inside the structure of a Bedford middle school was not properly dealt with.

Boston Asbestos Pipe Eruption Leaves Residents and Authorities Worried

The eruption of an underground asbestos insulated pipe in Boston, on Wednesday, July 14th, left surrounding areas full of steam carrying toxic asbestos dust. After the incident, crews cleaned the site of the eruption and surrounding areas for hours, as the old pipe’s asbestos insulation was scattered far and wide. Cleaning went on till the next afternoon because cars and streets surrounding Harrison Avenue were covered with debris from the eruption. The workers wearing hazmat suits cleaned up more than a dozen cars in order to ensure that they were asbestos free. About 90% of the old pipes underground still have asbestos insulation and thus, the eruption became a cause of worry for people living in the area and for the authorities as well.

$5.2 Million Awarded to Mesothelioma Victim – Biggest in Utah History

Making legal news in Salt Lake City, Utah, a jury recently awarded Vickie Warren, a heroic activist and victim of mesothelioma, an unprecedented $5.2 million in damages for the negligence of several corporations whose products exposed her to asbestos, a hazardous carcinogenic found in building and insulation materials. Mesothelioma is a particularly virulent form of cancer which is found in the lining of the body’s internal organs and is caused by exposure to asbestos.

Canadian Government Urged To Ban Mining And Export Of Asbestos

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA), the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA), and the National Specialty Society for Community Medicine (NSSCM) have called on the federal and provincial governments of Canada to stop funding the asbestos industry and to ban export of the mineral.
