Mesothelioma deaths on the rise in Libby

Notwithstanding the efforts made by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) officials, the number of deaths caused by asbestos in Libby, Montana continues to rise, as reported by the LA Times. Asbestos fibers from a former vermiculite mine have caused serious illness, including a rare form of cancer known as mesothelioma, among local residents. Many have died because they inhaled or ingested asbestos particles.

Over 5 Tons of Asbestos Dumped, Contractors Arrested

Charges have been filed against Robert L. Bishop and Salvatore P. Capizzi of Buffalo, New York, accused of the illegal dumping of over 5 tons of toxic asbestos waste. The men were arrested on Wednesday March 5, 2010, after an investigation by the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Bureau of Environmental Crimes Investigation and the attorney general’s office.

California Jury Awards $208 Million Verdict in Mesothelioma Case

A Los Angeles Jury has determined that mesothelioma victim, Rhoda Evans, and her husband, Bobby Evans, should be awarded $208 million dollars in compensatory and punitive damages from CertainTeed Corp. and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
