Asbestos Awareness Conference Next Weekend!

The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is hosting its Sixth Annual International Asbestos Conference from April 9-11, 2010 at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. Speakers from all over the world, including keynote speaker Jordan Barab, Deputy Assistant Secretary of The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, will address the conference regarding raising awareness about the prevention, detection and treatment of asbestos related diseases.

Asbestos buried at water treatment plant

Several Denver Water workers admitted to have buried toxic waste including asbestos near a number of schools and homes twenty years ago. One of the company’s retired employees, Joe Pacheco asserted that their manager instructed them to bury radiation asphalt, asbestos cement, and other hazardous materials at the Foothills Water Treatment Facility in Colorado’s Douglas County.

Professional Football Player, Merlin Olsen, Dies at 69 from Mesothelioma

Former football player, Merlin Olsen, who was diagnosed with mesothelioma, passed away at 69 years, on the 11th of March 2010. Olsen played for the Los Angeles Rams for 15 years as a defensive lineman and was considered one of the best players in the game.

What Is the Standard Treatment For Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare disease, representing only one percent of all cancers. Since it is so uncommon, the diagnosis and treatment are seldom done in smaller medical centers. Doctors at these centers may have never even had patients with the disease, and may only see two cases in their entire career. Even large centers such as the Mayo Clinic only see around three or four new patients with mesothelioma per month. Because of this rarity, the disease is often difficult to detect and diagnose, so once the disease is detected, it is important to begin treatment right away. Treatment options for mesothelioma are similar to other forms of cancer, however, because of the aggressiveness of the disease, an equally aggressive approach to treatment is often necessary.

House Resolution for Asbestos Awareness

In a press release issued in the first week of March, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) announced that a new resolution has been introduced in Congress, declaring the first week of April as ‘National Asbestos Awareness Week’. The resolution aims to create public awareness about asbestos-related diseases and the dangers of asbestos exposure. It was introduced in the United States House of Representatives by Representative Steve Cohen (D-TN) together with a group of co-sponsors and key supporters which included Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA), Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI) and Rep. Betty Sutton (D-OH).

Rock Concert to Benefit Mesothelioma Patient

On Tuesday March 9, 2010, the Hard Rock Café in Pittsburgh, PA will host “Darryl Kunkle’s Kicking Cancer Concert.” It is a rock concert benefitting Darryl Kunkle, a local mesothelioma victim and huge 80’s metal fan. The concert will feature 80’s rock groups “Bang Tango” and the “Bullet Boys” as well as special guests including the original “W.A.S.P.” guitarist Chris Holmes. The show will begin with a special tribute to the well loved local, Darryl Kunkle.
